Specialist Dentistry

Beyond the basics

Specialist dentists treat more complex dental conditions such as gum or mouth diseases or missing teeth.

The Dent8 Dental team includes an oral pathologist and a periodontist, meaning you can receive both general and advanced dental care in the same familiar, friendly place.

What does a periodontist do?

A periodontist is a dental specialist who treats problems with your gums, jawbone and ligaments, which all need to be healthy to support your teeth.  Your general dentist might refer you to a periodontist if you have gum disease or missing teeth.

Dr Michael Barber is our visiting periodontist. He’s currently president of the Australian Society of Implant Dentistry (Qld), super well-qualified and amazing at his job!

Dental implants

A dental implant is used to replace a missing tooth, supporting the bite, preventing drifting of teeth and improving your appearance.

Gingivitis and periodontitis

Healthy gums hold your teeth in place. Irritated, red, bleeding gums can be signs of gingivitis, a common gum disease that can be prevented with good dental hygiene.
If gingivitis isn’t addressed, it can progress to periodontitis, a serious condition that can cause deep infections and tooth loss. Gingivitis can cause bad breath. Periodontal disease is linked with systemic ill health including cardiovascular disease, premature birth and exacerbation of diabetes.

Oral cancer screening, diagnosis and treatment

Warning signs of oral cancer include changes to the surface of your mouth, persistent sores or ulcers, hoarseness or sore throat, excessively bleeding gums and difficulty chewing or swallowing.

A skilled oral pathologist will examine your mouth carefully and may take a tissue sample for biopsy. Once your results are back, we can discuss any treatment you may need.

What do oral pathologists do?

If your general dentist sees any concerning signs during your check-up, they may refer you to an oral pathologist.

An oral pathologist treats diseases affecting your mouth, including your lips, palate, inner cheeks, tongue, salivary glands, gums and jawbone. Oral pathologists also treat conditions such as burning mouth syndrome, lichen planus, geographic tongue, infections and mouth cancer.

Dr Arabelle Clayden is our consulting oral pathologist. She’s a leader in her field, a Fellow of the Oral Medicine Academy of Australasia and a past president of the Oral Medicine Society of Australia.
